Filmul are loc la sfarsitul secolului XXI, cand ia nastere o subcultura de oameni, modificati genetic de catre o boala similara cu cea a vampirilor (Hemophagia), care le da o agilitate si rezistenta incredibile si o inteligenta acuta.
Deoarece sunt separati de oamenii "normali" si "sanatosi", lumea este in pragul unui razboi civil la nivel mondial (un razboi intre oameni si hemofagi) care ar avea ca scop distrugerea populatiei "bolnave".
In mijlocul acestui foc incrucisat se afla o femeie infectata, pe nume Ultraviolet (Milla Jovovich), care va ajunge sa protejeze un baietel de noua ani, marcat pentru a fi ucis de catre guvernul oamenilor, deoarece se crede ca este o amenintare prea mare pentru oamenii sanatosi.
